Lost Slipper Releases Today!

I’m absolutely thrilled to share my new book with you today!

This is the first book I’ve released since graduate school (if we’re not counting my Mark Twain Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc graduate thesis project), and I’ve got two more on the way.

(But more on those in another post…)

Here’s what The Lost Slipper is all about:

Cosette dreams of her life becoming the perfect fairy tale—until her wishes come true. Can her fairy godmère take it back?

Every day is the same for Cosette. Get up, clean, make breakfast, and meet her stepmère’s and stepsisters’ every demand.

That is, until an encounter with a fairy of the forest—or is she a witch?—and an invitation to a fête in honor of Monsieur Gautier promises Cosette’s life is about to become the beautiful fairy tale of her dreams.

Or so the story should go.

Except her fairy godmère demands a high price for her help, one Cosette isn’t willing to pay. Her stepsisters are as afraid of their mère as Cosette is. Can she truly leave them to their fate? And the handsome Monsieur Gautier hides a dreadful secret, one she’s desperate to know—if only she can get close enough.

Cosette is faced with a choice: Should she feign ignorance and accept her happily ever after? Or dig deeper to find what may be lurking beneath?

If you like fairy tales turned upside down, and lovely young ladies learning to stand up for themselves and for others, then this “Cinderella” and “Diamonds and Toads” reimagining is the book for you.

Isn’t that exciting? Oh, I just loved writing this story, and I hope you will enjoy reading it.

I first wrote this 5k short story to be the seventh tale in my Beast Hunter and Other Fairy Tales special-edition hardback, but it blossomed into a 50k novella and had to be moved to its own book.

Delving into Cosette’s side of things while Ro is trapped in the château with the beast was so fun. She’s a completely different kind of character, and it was interesting to see how she reacted in the exact opposite way than Ro ever would.

But you can find that out for yourself. ;-)

(RSVP here to join the Online Release Party: Thursday, May 25th, 8-9:30 PM EST)

Be sure to join me for my online release party on Thursday, and I hope you love this wonderful new story!

I can’t wait to hear what you think.

u201cThe Lost Slipper is a retelling of two fairy tales that could have easily been enough to carry the story on their own, but the addition of u2018Diamonds and Toadsu2019 to the Cinderella narrative brilliantly escalates the tension and increases our poor heroineu2019s suffering. A thrilling, emotional tale for anyone who ever thought, u2018Cinderella had it too easy.u2019u201d

u201cThe Lost Slipper is a short but satisfying read about grace and kindness when beset with cruelty, creatively combining two beloved fairy tales into a new, complex fable.u201d

u201cAs someone who enjoys every Cinderella iteration Iu2019ve ever come across, The Lost Slipper blends my favorite familiar elements of the story with unique twistsu2014such as who the Fairy Godmother really is and the behavior of the stepsisters. With allusions that bring to mind Ever After, Ella Enchanted, and Into the Woods, readers will enjoy how Harper weaves this story and will be left wanting more!u201d
